Featured EE: Lightnings Native Crafts
Richard Harris is a Mohawk Indian and very aware of and involved in his proud culture. Items such as dream catchers, headdresses, medicine wheels and the like that some people might regard as trinkets take on a new meaning with Richard as he understands the history behind these items and gives them the proper reverence and respect they deserve. Richard is also very talented in hand making these items and telling the stories behind them to anyone who has the time to learn. Richard started Lightnings Native Crafts in late 2013 and has already taken part in many events, both native oriented and not. His items are available for sale everyday at our friends Filigrees Gallery and Boutique on Elmwood Ave and he is preparing to open his online store very soon. Richard lists all of the festivals and sales events that he takes part in on his website at lightningscrafts.blogspot.com as well as pictures of samples of his work. When you see Richard tell him that you heard about him through the EEOA!

The World of Self Advocacy
We usually try to keep it light and positive but this is a serious issue that we really feel is necessary to get out. Thanks to our friend Sophia from WNY SANYS for bringing this to our attention.
When this year's State Legislative session ended in June, people with disabilities were left with very little to cheer about. After months of fighting with the Assembly, we were ulitimately abandoned by the Senate after the Governor made some remarks while accepting a political nomination. At the same time, a state-wide union announced that it would only be giving political contributions to one party's candidates in the Senate and not the other.
Meanwhile, 17 disability advocates were arrested in Albany trying to get the Community First Choice (CFC) option in New York. CFC would have brought $350 million to New York every year while freeing thousands of pe ople with disabilities from institutions and allowing them to live in their own homes.
Frustrated, yet?
We are, too. That's why with the aid of ACCES-VR, we started a project known as the New York Disability Vote Network (NYDVN). NYDVN is a non-partisan effort to bring people with disabilities and their allies together, not to throw money around Albany, but to make our voices heard and our votes count.
We don't care who wins the elections as long as they work to help people with disabilities.

Event of the Month
Again we're going off the beaten path on this one. Normally we'll give you information on a community event or opportunity that we want you to know about. After searching through EVERYTHING that is going on in Western New York in August and September, there is just too much to choose from. So we're going to recommend that you create your own meaningful event....
http://www.volunteerwny.org/ is a great website that lists volunteer opportunities all over WNY. Long Term, Short Term, One Timers. Tons of local charitable organizations are looking for a little help from YOU. Check it out when you get the chance and make a difference by spending a little time helping others...
