2-1-1WNY available during the storm
2-1-1 IS THE NUMBER TO CALL FOR NON-EMERGENCY STORM INFO, SERVICES IN CATTARAUGUS, CHAUTAUQUA, ERIE, NIAGARA, WYOMING COUNTIES
Local residents with questions or non-emergency issues during the impending severe weather as a result of the East Coast storm should keep one easy-to-remember phone number in mind: 2-1-1. This service, a United Way-funded program of the Olmsted Center for Sight, is available 24/7 and provides information and referrals to health and human services in Erie, Niagara, Cattaraugus, Chautauqua and Wyoming Counties.
Anyone in those counties needing information or non-emergency services throughout the storm can simply dial 2-1-1, or 1-888-696-9211. Trained 2-1-1 operators will be available to provide information about emergency shelter, road closures, disaster relief, food, and other services that may be needed. Those with internet access can access information via the 2-1-1 website, 211wny.org (211wny.org Link) , which includes a searchable database that covers 2-1-1's service area.
During severe weather or other crises, 9-1-1 operators are often overwhelmed with calls from citizens needing information or non-critical services. Calling 2-1-1 instead of 9-1-1 in non-emergency situations (where health or safety is not in danger) can help ensure that first responders are available when and where they are most needed.
