Volunteer Opportunities!
The Buffalo Olmsted Parks Conservancy cannot keep the Olmsted Parks beautifully clean and green without your assistance!
We have several new volunteer projects below and we would love to schedule a time and date for you to assist us Monday-Saturday between 9am-5pm. (We can go later than 5pm if needed)
Thank you ahead of time!
Garlic Mustard Removal: Delaware Park and South Park
Its back! Within Delaware Park and South Park we have a white flowering plant that needs to be removed or it will overrun our forests. This little plant is an herb that was brought in from Europe that has the habit of spreading very quickly with seeds and crowing out native flowers and plants. It is totally non-toxic for humans/animals and safe to handle with bare hands but it is a menace to our native plants. Each park can handle a team of 10-25 people and we will work for 3-5 hours to remove it all! (You are free to keep as much this as you would like so long as you do not plant it)
War of 1812 Meadow Restoration: Delaware Park in the Great Lawn
Within the center of Delaware Park there is a meadow area that is currently being replanted with native plants and shrubs. This meadow is immediately adjacent to the War of 1812 burial site for 300 soldiers who were buried and is a historically significant site. Unfortunately there is a plant called Mugwort that is overgrowing this site and it needs to be removed or our efforts for replanting will have been wasted. Mugwort is an herb that was brought over from Europe and has medicinal properties. It is non toxic and safe to touch with bare hands. This site can handle a group of 15-25 people working for 3-5 hours and we would be able to complete the whole site in that time. (It makes a great dried herb for incense and you are free to take as much of this home as you would like so long as you do not plant it)
Painting in Delaware Park, Martin Luther King Jr Park and Riverside Park: Delaware Park near Parkside Avenue and Martin Luther King Jr Park near the Science Museum and Riverside Park, park wide.
We have many lovely garden beds that are framed by cast iron and steel fences, benches and shelter buildings. These fences, benches and shelter buildings need a new coat of rustoleum paint to keep them in tip-top shape. Each site can handle 25+ people and will take 3-5 hours to complete. Please note that Delaware Park has two such areas and each of the fenced areas will need 25 people working 3-5 hours to restore each of the fences.
Japanese Garden Buckthorn Removal: The Japanese Garden within Delaware Park adjacent to the Buffalo and Erie County Historical Society
Over the past several years the BOPC has been working very hard to restore the grounds of the Japanese Gardens to their former glory. Within the wooded section of this park is a plant called Buckthorn that if left unchecked will crowd out our Cherry Trees and Dogwoods. We can accommodate a group of 25 people working over 3-5 hours to remove this plant to make sure our new trees have a future!
Annuals Planting: System wide (late Spring/Early Summer)
This late May/early June we will be planting annuals within our traffic circles, Front Park, Martin Luther King Jr Park, Delaware Park and Cazenovia Park will be receiving a great number of annuals. Each site varies with the number of volunteers needed but we can schedule you and a group of your friends or co-workers ahead of time and bring the plants to you. Depending on the site, each planting will take 2-4 hours to complete.
If any of these projects sound like something that you and a group would be interested in please let me know and we can schedule a specific time and date. I am also more than happy to make these community service projects for students who need to achieve their minimum service hours for graduation.
Thank you again and please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions.
Best,
Steven S. Nagowski
